Which do you prefer?

Since we've been doing a lot of research into comics as part of the last few month's workload, we've decided to make that sort of stuff easier to find/avoid as you will.  One step towards this effort is establishing a regular feature: Cthulhu Ate My Comics, wich will kick-off later this week.  Below are two versions of the header image for the new feature.  Which one do you prefer?  We'll set up a poll along the righthand sidebar to collect reader votes.

Version One (No Seafood):

Version Two (Extra Tentacles):

Or The REVISED Version 2.B:

So, which one do you prefer?

9 comments:

  1. Version two for the added dynamism. It should give a better sense of the action taking place.

  2. I prefer version 2, but the type font color needs to be darker against the tentacles. As it is, the word "comics" comes off as buried pretty deep.

Maybe have the tentacles drip down from the roof.

Whatever. I just know that tentacles are cool. As long as they're not, you know, Japanese manga tentacles.

    [shudders in disgust]

  3. @Porky: Cool. I liked the way the tentacles added a bit more life to things myself. Dynamism is good. Thanks for voting!

@Bigby's Left Hand: Thanks for catching that--the colors shifted when I shrunk things down from the original size a bit. I've added a revised version 2.b just below Version 2. Alas, I have now learned that I cannot modify a poll once someone has voted.

Let's give things a week or so on the polling, and if enough people vote for Version 2, we'll run another poll for Version 2 versus 2.B, unless comments make it obvious that one beats the other.

We'll save the steel cage death match for some of the other stuff coming up instead...

Thanks for voting, visiting, reading...just for being you and dropping by!

  4. The first one is the most readable, IMHO.

Instead of tentacles, could other (less known) visual elements of the Cthulu mythos be used along the bottom of the first one?

Did you try a lighter glow instead of a drop shadow for the lettering?

Also, shrink all three down to thumbnail size and see how they register and read... I'm noticing that the first impression 'art' makes if I buy an RPG item online is at thumbnail size - a gross unfairness to the artist, but...

  5. I personally like the no-tentacles version. I'm not super happy about the "Lovecraft = tentacles" trope. It is, however, appropriate for a Cthulhu reference, and I've no doubt you've got a more nuanced grasp (heh) of Lovecraft than the average rpg.net douchebag. :)

  6. @Scottsz: Adding the tentacles was something of a joke--all the talk about "...if you just add some tentacles, it'll be all Lovecraftian..."--that just rubs me the wrong way. But in this case I thought it was kind of funny. Maybe lobster claws would be better. HPL really detested seafood, so maybe some fish-sticks...

I used a lot of glowy-stuff on the Mad Science & Pseudopods header, so this one I was going for something not quite so glowy. Huh. I'll mess about with the color-scheme some more, get a bit more contrast into thngs, make the letter pop a bit more.

@Timeshadows: 2B or not 2B--the question is really going to be 2B or 2C or 2D...if I can find some decent lobster bits...

@Scott: Agreed. The whole Tentacles=Lovecraft thing is moronic. But I thought that I'd take a poke at it just for fun. Thanks for the vote of confidence. We might want to quote you for the tagline...

  7. Version 2B looks good. It "Pops" more than the other two.
